The Berghold Family
The Berghold family name dates back to the 1600’s in Austria where it has been traced back to the meaning of “vineyard worker”. This ancestral fact may explain the current Berghold family’s passionate pursuit to produce only the finest winegrapes and estate wines.

Winegrape Growers First
The Berghold Family has been growing winegrapes in Lodi since 1986. Today, the estate is an assemblage of three contiguous vineyards totaling 85 acres of Syrah, Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Zinfandel. The family has been selling winegrapes to a number of fine wineries, including some based in Napa and Sonoma counties.

Becoming Winemakers
After nearly a decade of growing and selling their grapes to other wineries, the Bergholds decided the time had come to bottle and sell wine under the Berghold label. In 1999, Berghold Vineyards Syrah was born, followed in 2000 by Viognier. Today, the winery specializes in the production of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Viognier, and also produces a Cabernet-Syrah blend, Merlot and Zinfandel. Under the direction of the Berghold’s son and winemaker, Miles, all wines are estate vintages, are terroir driven, and are made using artisan techniques combined with state of the art technology.

A Victorian Winery and Tasting Room
Victorian winery owners, Joe and Kay Berghold, are collectors at heart. For nearly two decades, the couple purchased and stored antiques from the American Victorian period (1860 – 1900) with a goal in mind – to build an architecturally unique winery and tasting room representative of the era of the pieces in their collection – and the same era of beginning of Lodi wine history. That dream is now a reality in Berghold Vineyards and Winery.

What Next
What does the future hold for Berghold Vineyards and Winery? A line of reserve wines is planned to include a Sparkling Syrah and Syrah Port in addition to estate bottled Olive Oil. The family’s Late Harvest Viognier was released in October 2005 and has been a hit with visitors!
