The Lodi Appellation
Berghold Vineyards is located in the heart of the Lodi Appellation – a federally designated American Viticulture Area (AVA) recognized for the distinctive quality of its wines. The combined elements of weather, soil and history work to create the ideal environment for growing the finest winegrapes and crafting world class wines.

Weather
A classic Mediterranean climate, with warm dry summers and cool, moist winters, and an average annual rainfall of 17” creates a distinctive environment that allows premium winegrapes to flourish. The region is greatly influenced by it’s proximity to the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco Bay. As temperatures rise in the central valley, cool maritime breezes are pulled directly across the Lodi region creating the ideal growing conditions.

Soil
A variety of soils rich in minerals lend distinctive flavors to the wines of Lodi. From the Tokay Fine Sandy Loam – a well-drained sandy soil producing very uniform and balanced growth to the Tuscan Stony Loam – a well-drained gravelly soil allowing precise irrigation practices to intensify flavor and color, a number of dominant soil types contribute their unique attributes to Lodi wines.

History
Formed millions of years ago through geological events and alluvial waters, Lodi has been a major winegrape growing region since the 1850’s. The Mokelumne and Cosumnes Rivers which both originate in the Sierra Nevada, feed Lodi and were instrumental in bringing soils rich in minerals to the area. With generations of family owned vineyards now comprising more than 80,000 acres of premium winegrapes and more than 50 wineries, the Lodi Appellation is quickly becoming recognized as one of California’s most exciting new appellations.

Berghold Vineyards

Berghold Vineyards sits adjacent to the Mokelumne River at the base of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The 77 bearing acres of low-yield, flavor- concentrated grapes express the distinctive qualities of the Lodi Appellation’s warm days and cool nights and alluvial sandy loam soils. These forces of nature are combined with highly advanced viticultural practices, resulting in wines that are truly “made in the vineyard.” This terroir based concept offers a sense of place to the full line of Berghold estate wines, characterized by their fruit forward, balanced, easy-drinking style.
